The Master: Pierre-Auguste Renoir
Year Painted: 1881
Style: Impressionism
Patron Peach Party: Renoir painted this bowl at the Normandy home of his patron, Paul Bérard—using peaches (super delicate and bruise-prone) that were probably picked fresh from the orchard that morning.
Trompe-l’Oeil Tease: Back in the 1882 Impressionist show, critics raved that Renoir’s rendering of peaches was so luscious and realistic that “velvety execution verges on a trompe l’oeil (to fool the eye).”
