Artist: Katsushika Hokusai
Year Painted: c. 1831
Style: Ukiyo-e (Japanese Woodblock Print)
Wave of Fame: This print is the first in Hokusai’s Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji series — and probably the most famous piece of Japanese art in the world.
Not-So-Tiny Fuji: Mount Fuji in the background isn’t actually that small — Hokusai just played with perspective to make the wave the star of the show.
Ink & Innovation: The bold Prussian blue pigment used here was imported from Europe and was a brand-new craze in Japan at the time.
Feline Twist: Your cat wouldn’t be scared of the wave… they’d be out front surfing it, then demanding sashimi at the shore.
